Most Memorable Moment

By: Andrew Carandang

The most memorable moment from the section that I was assigned (pages 69-92) was when Jefferson Hope was explaining how and why he committed the crime of murdering Stangerson and Drebber. Although the scene was sad, it was interesting to see how much he thought about this crime and how to plot it out. He goes into depth explaining how he did complete each step to get closer to committing the crime.

All of this started because the love of his life, Lucy Ferrier, was forced to marry man named Enoch Drebber, he was born in a high-class family and was very arrogant. This was too much for Lucy to handle and she gives up on life. Jefferson wanted to get revenge on Drebber and Stangerson for what they have done to the Ferrier family. He walked many miles back to where the Mormons were, went up to Lucy’s body, and took the wedding ring from her hand saying “She shall not be buried in that.” (Doyle 77) He travels all over the place trying to find these two men. He follows them to America, then to England where he encounters the men. He would always keep an eye on the two men and he noticed that they never split up, they are always together. So he figured if he got them to split up, his plan would commence. Drebber himself was drunk half the time and Stangerson wouldn’t be seen napping.

Finally his chance got to come when Stangerson and Drebber go to the train station. Drebber tells Stangerson that he has some unfinished business he has do and he must do it alone. Once the two wonder off in different directions, Jefferson follows Drebber in hope that he would be drunk and it would be easier to kill him. He was right, Drebber had come out of a bar and he was not walking very straight, he hailed a cab which Jefferson was in and his heart was pumping with joy. He ordered the driver to go to a house on Brixton Road and this is where he slept. A few hours later, Jefferson woke him up and Drebbers face when he saw Jefferson was livid, he was scared. Jefferson took out two pills, one was poison, and the other one was harmless. They both swallowed one and Drebber was the ill-fated one. Stangerson hears about his death and is extremely worried. When Jefferson reaches the hotel Stangerson is staying at, Stangerson is very worried and would not allow him in. So Jefferson climbs up the window and when Stangerson tries to attack him, he stabs Stangerson in the chest.

So these are reasons why I have chosen this piece from a section as the most memorable moment. It was very exciting and interesting for me to read.

There were many interesting parts in my selection however the most memorable one would have to be when John Ferrier talks to the prophet. The Mormon people have entered John’s home and informs him that his daughter Lucy has to be forced to marry someone the elders have chosen, if his daughter doesn’t agree to marry she would be committing a grievous sin. During this time his daughter over heard the conversation. She goes up to her father and begins to cry, John could tell she heard the conversation and tries to comfort her. He could she the fear in her eyes knowing she didn’t want this. John comes up with a plan so that him and his daughter could be free from this place, he offers to leave his farm and move out of Salt Lake City. Lucy agrees to this making her feel better. The following day two men enter John’s home, they were sons of the elders, and have both came to win over John’s daughter. Joseph and Drebber both say that they’re more worthy of marrying his daughter but John isn’t to happy about this. During their conversation, John interrupts them and tells them there are two ways out, the door or the window. The two men stared at John in amazement, John’s face looked so savage and hands looked so threatening, the two men immediately left his home. Joseph Stagerson felt so offended, he threatened John of what he is going to do and left with any hesitation. This was defiantly an important part of the selection it revealed how John felt about Joseph and Drebber marrying his daughter, and what John just did to the elders son.

I would have to say their were some good most memorable moments in this novel but the one that stook with me I would have to say is when Sherlock Homes the old woman who lost her daughters ring which was at the crime scean. Holmes told Watson that he would follow her because she was clearly an accomplice and might lead him to the murderer. Watson waited up for Holmes, perusing a book since he could not sleep. When Holmes came back home he had a big smile on his face and laugh so hard that he couldn't breath. He told how he had followed the woman on foot for a while, and then jumped on the back of her cab when she hailed one to take her the rest of the way. When the cab stopped and Holmes jumped off, he heard the driver exclaim in anger because there was no longer anyone in the cab. The woman had jumped out at some point, aware that she was being followed. Watson and Holmes couldn't believe that an old woman would jump out of cab so that's when they realize that it must been disguises and that it could be young man who was very active .

After reading my section of the book the most memorable moment for me would have to when Sherlock Homes said he had solved the mystery and both Lestrade and Gregson stood there amazed . This is the most memorable moment for me because both Lestrade and Gregson thought that they were the best soctland yard detectives and when. Gregson did not like Homes from the start so he was more shocked because he felt that he was the better one out of the 3 and thought he would be the one solving it. Sherlock Homes jumped up from his chair and yelled "My case is complete". Sherlock used the evidence that was given to him from Gregson and Lestrade to put the puzzles together and solve it in the end. Gergson and Lestade may have felt as if they were used because after all the 3 of them were all detectives. I think that the two may have felt ashamed that how did Homes's solve it and not them. So overall i found this to be my most memorable because  I found it funny that sherlock solved it and them it said "The two detectives stared at him in amazement"(doyle 43). this quote tells us that may be Lestrade and Gregson did not want that to happen and may have wanted to solve it by there selves or at least with Homes's.
